ANNAPOLIS, MD – This week Senator Roger Manno was recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense for a new law to hire returning warriors, Veterans and their families.
The legislation (SB245/HB306), effective October 1st, authorizes private sector hiring preferences for Veterans, specifically under a provision of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
“I am very proud of this legislation, because it recognizes the challenges that returning warriors face in reintegrating into the workforce” stated Manno, “I appreciated the opportunity to partner with Delegate Will Smith on this important legislation. I am honored by this Department of Defense recognition and accept it on behalf of all of our active duty military, Veterans and their families.”
Maryland is home to more than 430,000 Veterans. The state’s overall Veteran unemployment rate is more than 60 percent higher than the national average, and more than 250 percent higher for Veterans who are women.
