Roger’s Hate Crimes Security Program Passes

Annapolis, MD – Today, the Senate and House  passed Senator Roger Manno’s Senate Bill 1191 – Schools and Child Care Centers – State Grant Program – Security Upgrades for Facilities at Risk of Hate Crimes or Attacks. This important legislation authorizes the Maryland Center for School Safety to make grants to schools and child care centers determined to be at risk of hate crimes or attacks because of their race, color, religious belief, sexual orientation, gender, disability, or national origin, for security-related technology and facility upgrades.

Roger’s Pregnant and Parenting Student Attendence Bill Passes!

Annapolis, MD – Tonight, both the House and the Senate passed Senator Roger Manno’s Senate Bill 232 – Education – Pregnant and Parenting Students – Attendance Policy – a key legislative priority of NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland.

“Young women who are pregnant or parenting often struggle in school due to lack of support from the school district,” stated Roger. “These  students need excused absences for medical appointments or to care for their children, and they need resources to make up the schoolwork missed during that time. It has been a difficult situation, but I partnered with NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland and activists across the state to create an attendance policy in schools for pregnant and parenting students for their medical and legal appointments. And we got it done. ”

Roger’s Education Testing Reform Bill Passes

Annapolis, MD – This week, the Maryland General Assembly passed Senator Roger Manno’s Senate Bill 452 – Education – Accountability Program – Assessments (Less Testing, More Learning Act of 2017), to address the problem of onerous and ultimately unproductive standardized testing requirements that hinder the progress of our children and their educators.
